Coevorden: Fortified Border Town in Southern Drenthe

Coevorden has about 14,600 residents and lies in the south of Drenthe near the German border. The town was strategically important as a fortress controlling the route between the northern Netherlands and Germany through the marshlands. The star-shaped fortification, designed in the 17th century, is still clearly visible in the town layout. The Kasteel van Coevorden, rebuilt as a hotel, stands at the centre of the former defensive works.

The Coevorden-Piccardie canal connects the town to the German canal system. Cross-border trade and commuting with Nordhorn and Emlichheim in Germany are part of the local economy. The Van Heutszmuseum, named after a controversial colonial governor born in Coevorden, was renamed and reoriented to address the broader colonial history. The surrounding landscape transitions from the Hondsrug sandy ridge to the peat areas of the Schoonebeeker Diep valley.

Emmen is about 15 kilometres northeast. Zwolle lies roughly 50 kilometres west. Nordhorn in Germany is approximately 20 kilometres south.
