Dronten has about 28,100 inhabitants and lies in the middle of Eastern Flevoland, a polder reclaimed from the IJsselmeer in 1957. The town was founded in 1962 as the central settlement for the new polder. Like all Flevoland towns, it was planned from scratch on land that was underwater within living memory. De Meerpaal, a combined theatre and cultural centre, has served as the social heart since the early years.
Agriculture, particularly arable farming on the fertile clay, dominates the surrounding land. The Roggebotzand forest, planted on the polder edge, provides recreation. The Veluwemeer separates Dronten from the old land to the east, with the Roggebotsluis lock connecting the polder waterways to the lake.
Lelystad is about 20 kilometres west. Kampen lies roughly 15 kilometres northeast across the water. Harderwijk is approximately 15 kilometres east on the old land shore.
