Urk: Former Island Turned Fishing Community on the Flevoland Polder
Urk has about 17,345 residents and lies in Flevoland on what was once an island in the Zuiderzee. When the Noordoostpolder was reclaimed in 1942, Urk became connected to the mainland. The community maintained its distinct identity, dialect, and strong Reformed Protestant faith.
