Zeewolde: Youngest Municipality on the Flevoland Polder

Zeewolde has about 19,022 residents and lies in Flevoland on the Southern Flevoland polder, reclaimed from the IJsselmeer in 1968. The municipality was established in 1984, making it one of the youngest in the Netherlands. Unlike the planned cities of Almere and Lelystad, Zeewolde was designed as a smaller, green settlement with extensive forest plantations surrounding it.

The Horsterwold, planted in the 1970s and 1980s, is now the largest deciduous forest in western Europe. The Wolderwijd lake on the northern edge provides sailing and swimming. The town itself has a modest centre with a harbour on the Wolderwijd. A controversial data centre development by Meta was proposed near Zeewolde in the early 2020s, drawing national debate about land use on the polders. Agriculture, particularly arable farming on the fertile clay soils, remains economically significant.

Amersfoort is about 25 kilometres southwest. Harderwijk lies roughly 15 kilometres east across the water. Lelystad is approximately 25 kilometres north.
