Bolsward: Frisian Town of Fountains and a Ruined Church
The roofless Broerekerk, a Gothic church left deliberately as a ruin after a 1980 fire, stands in Bolsward's centre as an open-air cultural venue. This Friesland town of roughly 9,200 residents was one of the eleven Frisian cities and a minor member of the Hanseatic League. The ornate Renaissance facade of the Stadhuis on the Jongemastraat, dating from 1614 to 1617, is among the finest municipal buildings in the northern Netherlands.
Bolsward gained renewed attention through the Eleven Fountains project of 2018, when each of Friesland's historic cities received a contemporary art fountain. Bolsward's contribution stands near the Broerekerk. The town also lies on the Elfstedentocht route, the legendary 200-kilometre ice skating tour last held in 1997. Dairy processing has been central to the economy: the former Bolsward butter factory was once a major employer.
Sneek is about 10 kilometres north, Leeuwarden roughly 28 kilometres northeast.
