Known in Frisian as Burgum and in Dutch as Bergum, this town of about 9,720 residents serves as the seat of the gemeente Tytsjerksteradiel. The Kuiperspolle and the Burgumer Mar lake to the northeast provide watersports and recreation. The town grew from a rural service centre into a residential community with new housing drawing families from Leeuwarden and Drachten.
The centre has shops and services along the Schoolstraat. The Kloosterkerk dates from the medieval period. The surrounding landscape is typical northern Frisian: open farmland on clay and sand soils, with scattered woodland to the south where the soil becomes sandier toward the Friese Wouden. Leeuwarden is about 10 kilometres west, Drachten roughly 10 kilometres southeast.
