De Greiden: Leeuwarden Expansion on Former Pasture
The name means "the grasslands," and De Greiden was exactly that before Leeuwarden expanded southwestward from the 1960s onward. Row houses and apartment blocks replaced dairy pastures. About 7,470 people live in the neighbourhood, which sits between the Frisian capital's centre and the A31 motorway ring.
Renovation programmes in the 2000s addressed some of the original housing stock, improving insulation and updating floor plans. The neighbourhood has a mixed demographic, with both established Frisian families and newer residents. Shopping and amenities cluster along the Julianalaan. Leeuwarden's centre, with the Fries Museum and the Oldehove leaning tower, is about 2 kilometres northeast. The flat Frisian countryside beyond the motorway offers cycling routes through open pastureland.
Primary schools, a community centre, and a local sports park serve daily needs. During Leeuwarden's year as European Capital of Culture in 2018, several projects reached into De Greiden and other outer neighbourhoods.
