In 754 AD, the Anglo-Saxon missionary Boniface was killed near Dokkum while attempting to convert the Frisians. The Bonifatiuskapel and a fountain on the Markt still commemorate that event. As one of the eleven Frisian cities, Dokkum retains a well-preserved fortified centre with ramparts and a moat, home to about 12,669 residents within the gemeente Noardeast-Fryslan.
