Harlingen: Frisian Port Town with Canal Houses and Wadden Ferries
Harlingen has about 16,119 residents and lies on the Wadden Sea coast in Friesland. The town is the departure point for ferries to the islands of Terschelling and Vlieland, operated by Rederij Doeksen. Harlingen's historic harbour, lined with 17th and 18th-century canal houses, warehouses, and merchant residences, makes it one of the most atmospheric coastal towns in the northern Netherlands. The Zuiderhaven and Noorderhaven canals lead directly into the town centre.
The town has eleven Frisian stadiums, the traditional historic city status in Friesland. The Hannemahuis museum displays paintings, ceramics, and ship models related to Harlingen's maritime past. The Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is visible from the harbour. Salt production and shipping were historically important.
