Scherpenzeel: Small Municipality in the Gelderse Vallei
With fewer than 10,000 residents, Scherpenzeel is one of the smallest independent municipalities in the Netherlands and has fought to stay that way. A proposed merger with Barneveld was contested in court and publicly debated for years. The village of about 8,820 people lies in the Gelderse Vallei, the valley between the Veluwe and Utrechtse Heuvelrug ridges, an agricultural area of dairy farms and poultry operations.
The Reformed church tradition runs deep in the Gelderse Vallei, and Scherpenzeel reflects this in its social institutions and Sunday routines. The village centre is compact: a main street, a church, a small selection of shops. Amersfoort is about 12 kilometres west, Barneveld roughly 8 kilometres east. The Valleilijn rail connection runs through nearby stations but does not stop in Scherpenzeel itself.
