Stiens: North of Leeuwarden in the Frisian Clay
Northward from Leeuwarden, the flat clay landscape opens up toward the Wadden Sea coast. Stiens sits in this agricultural zone, about 8 kilometres from the Frisian capital, with roughly 7,300 residents. It serves as the main village of the gemeente Leeuwarden's northern area, following the 2018 merger of the former gemeente Leeuwarderadeel.
Dairy farming dominates the surrounding land. The village centre has a Reformed church, a Catholic church, and a main shopping street along the Ljouwerterdyk. Stiens has maintained its own identity despite the administrative merger, with active village associations and local events. The Stienzer Omloop cycling race is an annual fixture.
Leeuwarden station is reachable by bus in about fifteen minutes. The Wadden Sea coast at Holwerd, departure point for the Ameland ferry, is about 25 kilometres northeast.
