Aalten: Border Town in the Achterhoek with Wartime Resistance History
Aalten has about 19,141 residents and lies in the Achterhoek region of Gelderland near the German border. The town gained recognition for the large number of people hidden here during the Second World War. Relative to its size, Aalten sheltered one of the highest concentrations of onderduikers (people in hiding) in the Netherlands, including Jews, resistance members, and men evading forced labour. The Markt en Onderduikmuseum documents this history.
The centre around the Markt and the Helenakerk is compact. The surrounding Achterhoek landscape features small-scale farms, hedgerows, and winding country roads. The Slinge stream flows south of town toward Germany. Textile manufacturing, particularly in Bredevoort to the south, was historically important but has declined. Bredevoort has reinvented itself as a book town with antiquarian bookshops.
Winterswijk is about 12 kilometres southeast. Doetinchem lies roughly 20 kilometres northwest. The German border is approximately 5 kilometres east.
