Apeldoorn sits on the eastern flank of the Veluwe in Gelderland, with around 136,700 inhabitants. The city grew largely because of Paleis Het Loo, built in 1686 as a hunting lodge for Stadhouder Willem III and later used as a summer residence by the Dutch royal family until 1975. After extensive restoration the palace reopened as a museum, with formal baroque gardens that were reconstructed to their original 17th-century layout.
The Apenheul, a primate park where monkeys roam freely among visitors, is one of the more unusual zoological attractions in the country. The Veluwe, the largest continuous forested area in the Netherlands, begins directly west of the built-up area and includes heathland, sand drifts, and dense pine and broadleaf woods.
Deventer is about 25 kilometres east along the IJssel. Amersfoort lies roughly 35 kilometres southwest. The insurance industry historically concentrated here, with Achmea and Centraal Beheer both headquartered in Apeldoorn.
Berg en Bos, a park on the glacial moraine at the western edge of town, provides elevation unusual for the Netherlands, reaching about 90 metres above sea level.
