Arnhem: Bridge Too Far and the Veluwe's Eastern Edge
Arnhem is the capital of Gelderland province with approximately 141,700 inhabitants. The city gained lasting international recognition through Operation Market Garden in September 1944, when Allied paratroopers attempted to capture the Rhine bridge here. The Airborne Museum at Oosterbeek and the Airborne Monument on the northern bank preserve this history. The John Frostbrug, the modern bridge on the site of the original, carries the name of the British commander who held the northern end.
The city sits where the Veluwe's forested hills descend to the Rhine floodplain. The Nederlands Openluchtmuseum, an extensive open-air museum covering Dutch daily life from 1600 onward, spreads across 44 hectares on the Veluwe edge. Burgers' Zoo, one of the larger zoological parks in the Netherlands, is nearby.
Nijmegen lies 18 kilometres south across the Waal. The Hoge Veluwe national park, with the Kroller-Muller Museum and its Van Gogh collection, is accessible within 20 minutes northwest of the city.
