On 10 August 1925, a tornado struck Borculo and destroyed much of the town centre, killing one person and leaving hundreds homeless. The event remains the most documented tornado in Dutch history. Borculo was rebuilt and the Berkel river still flows through its centre, as it did before the storm. About 10,373 residents live here within the gemeente Berkelland.
The rebuilt centre around the Markt has a modest commercial strip. The Berkelland municipality, formed in 2005, also includes Eibergen, Neede, and Ruurlo. The Achterhoek landscape of mixed farmland, hedgerows, and small woods surrounds the town. The Stichting Historisch Borculo maintains archives and exhibits about the tornado and local history.
