Dieren has about 14,842 residents and lies in Gelderland within the gemeente Rheden, at the foot of the Veluwezoom hills where they meet the IJssel valley. The village stretches along the Zutphensestraatweg, the old road connecting Arnhem to Zutphen. Several country estates, including Hof te Dieren, a former royal hunting lodge, line the transition zone between the wooded hills and the river plain.
The Veluwezoom national park rises directly behind the village, offering forested hills, heathland, and populations of red deer and wild boar. The Dierense Kanaal, an artificial waterway, runs through the village. The IJssel floodplain to the east provides open landscape views. The railway station on the Arnhem-Zutphen line connects Dieren to both cities. The Carolinahoeve and other estate gardens are occasionally open to the public.
Arnhem is about 12 kilometres southwest. Zutphen lies roughly 15 kilometres northeast. Doesburg is approximately 8 kilometres east.
