Duiven has roughly 25,470 residents and lies in the Liemers region of Gelderland between Arnhem and Zevenaar. The town grew considerably from the 1970s onward as a residential municipality for commuters working in Arnhem and the wider Rijnmond area. The centre around the Rijksweg has basic commercial facilities. The Groessen village within the municipality retains a more rural character.
The Kanaal van Pannerden, which splits the Rhine into the Nederrijn and the IJssel, passes east of the built-up area. The flat Liemers polder landscape, with its views toward the Veluwe hills in the north, defines the surroundings. Duiven borders Westervoort to the west and Zevenaar to the east.
Arnhem is approximately 10 kilometres northwest. The German border is about 15 kilometres east. Nijmegen lies roughly 20 kilometres south.
