Eibergen: Textile Town in the Eastern Achterhoek
Eibergen has about 16,493 residents and lies in the Achterhoek region of Gelderland within the gemeente Berkelland since 2005. The town grew with the textile industry in the 19th and 20th centuries, with weaving mills employing much of the local workforce. After the industry collapsed in the 1970s, the economy diversified into smaller manufacturing, agriculture, and services. The Berkel river flows through the town and has been partly restored to a more natural course.
The centre around the Grotestraat and the Oude Mattheuskerk is compact. The Mallumse Molen, a watermill on the Berkel, still grinds grain and is open to visitors. The surrounding Achterhoek landscape of hedgerows, small farms, and winding lanes characterises the area. The annual Eibargse Revue, a dialect theatre production, reflects the strong local identity. Cross-border connections with the German Munsterland are part of daily life.
Enschede is about 25 kilometres northeast. Groenlo lies roughly 10 kilometres south. Haaksbergen is approximately 12 kilometres north.
