Elst has about 20,488 residents and lies in Gelderland within the gemeente Overbetuwe, positioned almost exactly between Arnhem and Nijmegen. The village sits on the site of a Roman settlement, evidenced by archaeological finds including remains of a Roman temple dedicated to local deities. The location at the junction of the Arnhem-Nijmegen and Utrecht-Arnhem railway lines makes it a commuter hub.
The centre around the Grote Kerk has expanded considerably since the 1960s with new residential districts stretching outward. The Linge river, which marks the northern boundary of the Over-Betuwe, flows through agricultural land nearby. Fruit orchards, characteristic of the Betuwe, still occupy parts of the surrounding landscape. The Waalsprong development across the river in Nijmegen has brought the city closer to Elst's eastern edge.
Arnhem is about 10 kilometres north. Nijmegen lies roughly 10 kilometres south. The A325 connects both cities directly through Elst.
