Huissen: Walled Town in the Betuwe Now Part of Lingewaard
Huissen has about 19,725 residents and lies in Gelderland within the gemeente Lingewaard, south of Arnhem on the edge of the Betuwe. The town was historically fortified, and sections of the old ramparts and moat are still traceable in the town layout. The Grote Kerk, a late-Gothic church, stands at the centre. Huissen belonged to the Duchy of Kleve rather than Gelderland for much of its history, giving it a distinct administrative past.
The surrounding landscape is typical Betuwe: flat river clay soils with fruit orchards and dairy farms. The Looveer, a small ferry crossing on the Neder-Rijn, connects Huissen to the north bank. Urban expansion since the 1970s has brought new residential districts and a growing commuter population for Arnhem. The Lingezegen park, a regional green zone between Arnhem and Nijmegen, extends into the municipality.
Arnhem is about 8 kilometres north. Nijmegen lies roughly 15 kilometres southwest. Bemmel, the administrative centre of Lingewaard, is about 4 kilometres south.
