Leesten: Suburban District in Southern Zutphen
As Zutphen expanded south from the 1970s onward, Leesten took shape as a residential district of family homes, low-rise flats, and green corridors. About 10,000 residents live here within the gemeente Zutphen. The neighbourhood has its own primary schools, sports facilities, and a small shopping area. The design follows the spacious suburban planning common to that era.
The Baakse Beek stream valley lies south of Leesten, providing walking and cycling routes into the open countryside. The historic centre of Zutphen, with its medieval Librije and fortified old town, is a short bus ride or cycle north. Most residents work in Zutphen, Deventer, or Apeldoorn. Zutphen's centre is about 3 kilometres north, Deventer roughly 15 kilometres northwest.
