Lichtenvoorde has about 19,590 residents and lies in the Achterhoek region of Gelderland, within the gemeente Oost Gelre since 2005. The town is well known for its carnival celebrations, unusual in a predominantly Protestant region. The Lichtenvoordse carnavalsoptocht is one of the larger parades in the eastern Netherlands.
