Neede: Achterhoek Textile Town on the Berkel
Textile mills along the Berkel river powered Neede's economy for much of the 19th and 20th centuries. The stream's water drove early mechanisation, and later steam and electric looms followed. When the Dutch textile industry collapsed in the 1960s and 1970s, Neede had to reinvent itself. About 7,730 people live here now, in the gemeente Berkelland, in the eastern Achterhoek region of Gelderland.
The Berkel still flows through the town, recently restored to a more natural course as part of water management improvements. The surrounding Achterhoek landscape of small fields, hedgerows, and scattered farms is popular with touring cyclists. Enschede lies about 25 kilometres northeast, Zutphen roughly 30 kilometres west. Neede has no rail station; bus connections link it to surrounding towns.
The annual Needse Slag, a historical re-enactment of a 1580 battle during the Eighty Years' War, takes place near the old town centre. Local volunteer groups organise the event, which draws visitors from across the Achterhoek.
