Rijswijk has about 47,300 residents and is sandwiched between The Hague and Delft in South Holland. The town entered the history books through the Treaty of Rijswijk in 1697, which ended the Nine Years' War between France and a European coalition. The Huis te Rijswijk where negotiations took place no longer exists, but the Oude Kerk and the surrounding streets around the Herenstraat preserve an older village core within the otherwise suburban fabric.
The Plaspoelpolder, a business park along the A4 motorway, houses the Netherlands' International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia archives and several government-related offices. The Hoornwijck area near the A13/A4 interchange has seen significant office development.
The Hague's centre is about 5 kilometres north. Delft lies roughly 5 kilometres south. Den Haag Centraal, Den Haag HS, and Delft stations are all easily reachable. The Vlietzone, a green corridor along the Vliet canal, separates Rijswijk from Voorburg.
