Ulft: Ironworks Town on the Oude IJssel
For nearly 250 years, the DRU ironworks produced household goods, stoves, and enamelware in Ulft. The factory closed in 2003, but the DRU Industriepark now fills the former buildings with a theatre, exhibition space, and events venue. About 10,440 people live in this Achterhoek town within the gemeente Oude IJsselstreek.
The Oude IJssel provided the water power that originally drove the ironworks. The river valley has been partly restored as a nature corridor, and a footbridge across the water connects Ulft to neighbouring Gendringen. The Achterhoek landscape of farms, hedgerows, and small woods extends in all directions. Doetinchem is about 10 kilometres northwest, Emmerich in Germany roughly 15 kilometres south.
