Velp has about 17,669 residents and lies in Gelderland within the gemeente Rheden, directly east of Arnhem. The village developed as an affluent residential area in the 19th century, when wealthy Arnhem families built villas along the wooded slopes connecting the Veluwe to the IJssel valley. Several of these country estates, including Biljoen and Beekhuizen, are now publicly accessible as parks and nature areas.
