Wijchen has about 32,700 inhabitants and lies in Gelderland directly south of Nijmegen. The municipality grew from a rural village into a commuter town during the post-war decades, particularly after the construction of the Wijchen-Zuid neighbourhood in the 1970s. The old centre around the Markt and the Kasteel Wijchen, a medieval castle rebuilt in later centuries, preserves a village core within the suburban surroundings.
Archaeological finds from the Roman period and earlier have been made in the area, as the land between the Maas and Waal rivers was settled long before the current town existed. The Wijchens Meer, a small recreational lake, provides local outdoor space. The A50 and A73 motorways pass near the municipality.
Nijmegen's centre is about 10 kilometres north. Oss lies roughly 20 kilometres west. The flat river land of the Maas-Waalkanaal area defines the landscape.
