Hoogezand has about 21,480 residents and lies in the province of Groningen, within the gemeente Midden-Groningen formed in 2018. The town developed along the Winschoterdiep canal, which connected Groningen city to the peat colonies further east. Peat extraction shaped the landscape and economy from the 17th century onward, leaving behind the characteristic ribbon development along the waterway.
Together with neighbouring Sappemeer, Hoogezand forms a continuous built-up area. The Kieldiep industrial zone hosts several employers, while many residents commute to Groningen city. The Borgerswold recreation area south of town offers a lake, camping, and woodland. The Foxhol cardboard factory, established in the 19th century, reflects the area's industrial past.
Groningen city is about 15 kilometres northwest. Veendam lies roughly 10 kilometres southeast. The A7 motorway runs directly past the town.
