Veendam counts roughly 28,200 inhabitants and lies in the eastern part of Groningen province. Like many Groningen towns, it grew as a veenkolonie along canals dug for peat extraction. The Veenkoloniaal Museum documents the hard living conditions of the peat workers and the region's economic history. Shipping became important once the peat ran out: Veendam captains traded across northern Europe, and the town's maritime school trained generations of sailors.
The Oosterpark, a public garden from the 19th century, provides the main green space. The Borgercompagnie and Wildervank, former peat settlement villages, border the municipality. The Hondsrug, a low glacial ridge running from Groningen to Emmen, passes just west of the town.
Groningen city is about 35 kilometres northwest. Stadskanaal lies roughly 15 kilometres east. Assen is approximately 30 kilometres southwest.
