The Kasteeltuinen Arcen cover 32 hectares of themed gardens surrounding a 17th-century castle. Rose gardens, a Casa Verde tropical greenhouse, oriental water features, and a golf course make it one of the most visited garden attractions in the southern Netherlands. The village of Arcen has about 8,793 residents and sits within the gemeente Venlo, on the west bank of the Maas river.
Beyond the castle grounds, Arcen has a compact village centre and a small harbour on the Maas. The annual Lichtjesroute, an illuminated boat procession on the river, draws visitors on summer evenings. The Maas flood risk has prompted dike reinforcements over the years, most recently after the July 2021 flooding that affected much of Limburg. Venlo's centre is about 10 kilometres south.
