Beek: South Limburg Between Airport and Orchard
Maastricht Aachen Airport occupies a large part of the gemeente Beek, making aviation and logistics significant employers. The airport has operated from this plateau since the 1940s, originally as a military airfield. About 8,500 residents live in the town itself, on the eastern edge of the South Limburg plateau, with views across the Geul valley toward the Belgian border.
Cherry and apple orchards once blanketed the hillsides around Beek. Commercial fruit growing has declined, but spring blossom routes still draw cyclists. The Limburg mergelland landscape, with its sunken lanes (holle wegen) and half-timbered farms, begins south of the town. Maastricht is about 10 kilometres south, Sittard roughly 8 kilometres north.
Mining history also left its mark: the Staatsmijn Maurits operated nearby until 1967, and former miners' housing colonies are visible in the surrounding area.
