Located on higher ground between the Maas floodplain and the Limburg plateau, Echt has been a market town since the Middle Ages. The Sint-Landricuskerk and the compact historic core along the Plats square recall this longer history. About 8,900 residents live in the town, which since 2003 forms part of the merged gemeente Echt-Susteren.
Chemical and manufacturing firms operate in the industrial zones west of the centre. The Limbricht castle ruins and the Mundium park lie within cycling distance. Maastricht is about 30 kilometres south, Roermond roughly 15 kilometres north. The A2 motorway runs just east, linking Echt to the Randstad and the Belgian border.
