Lindenheuvel: Mining-Era Neighbourhood in Sittard-Geleen
The Staatsmijn Maurits needed workers, and Lindenheuvel was built to house them. Constructed from the 1920s onward as a planned garden village for mine employees, the neighbourhood has a distinctive layout of curved streets, small front gardens, and uniform brick housing. About 8,040 residents live here, in the gemeente Sittard-Geleen.
When the mines closed in the 1960s and 1970s, the economic base shifted to chemicals (DSM, now Chemelot) and car manufacturing (VDL Nedcar in nearby Born). Renovation programmes updated the original miners' houses while preserving the garden-village character. The neighbourhood sits between Sittard centre to the north and Geleen to the south, both reachable on foot. The Graetheide heath extends east, a remnant of the pre-industrial landscape.
Carnival is central to Lindenheuvel's social calendar, as in most Limburg neighbourhoods. The local carnival association organises events that run for several days, with the neighbourhood competing with Sittard and Geleen for the most enthusiastic celebrations.
