Three waterways meet at Nederweert: the Noordervaart, the Zuid-Willemsvaart, and the Kanaal Wessem-Nederweert. This junction made the town a minor inland shipping node, and a lock complex manages water levels and barge traffic. About 8,400 residents live in this Middle Limburg town, seat of the gemeente Nederweert.
The surrounding Peel landscape was once vast peatland. Reclamation from the 19th century onward turned it into agricultural ground, primarily dairy farming and arable crops. Remnants of the original Peel are preserved in nature reserves like the Groote Peel, a few kilometres east. Weert lies about 5 kilometres south, Eindhoven roughly 30 kilometres northwest.
