Panningen: Commercial Centre of the Limburg Peel
Where the reclaimed peatlands of the Peel meet the sandy Maas terraces, Panningen serves as the main shopping and service town for the gemeente Peel en Maas. About 8,600 people live here. The Markt square and Roggelseweg form the commercial axis, with supermarkets, banks, and specialist shops serving a wider rural catchment area.
Asparagus cultivation is a regional trademark: white asparagus season in May and June is marked by roadside sales stands and restaurant menus throughout the area. The Peel nature reserves, partly restored from former agricultural peatland, lie east of the town. The annual Panningen fair (kermis) and the carnival celebrations reflect the Limburg social calendar that structures much of community life in this part of the province. Venlo is about 20 kilometres north.
