Tegelen: Pottery Town and Open-Air Theatre in North Limburg
Tegelen has about 20,190 residents and lies in Limburg as part of the gemeente Venlo since the 2001 merger. The town has a long tradition of pottery and tile making, going back to Roman times when the local clay was already being used for ceramics. The Pottenbakkersmuseum documents this craft history. Tegelen is also known for the Openluchttheater Tegelen, an open-air theatre that has staged passion plays and other large productions since 1931.
The Tegelse Bossen, a wooded area on the terrace edge west of town, provides walking and cycling routes. The landscape transitions from the Maas valley floor to the higher river terraces. The Steyl monastery complex, just south in the Venlo district of Steyl, houses the Missiemuseum and is connected to Tegelen's Catholic heritage. Industrial activity includes ceramics, logistics, and greenhouse horticulture.
