Venlo: Maas River Trade Town on the German Border
Venlo has roughly 101,600 inhabitants and lies in the northern part of Limburg province, directly on the Maas river and within a few kilometres of the German border. The city has been a trading post since the Middle Ages, and its position on the Maas made it a strategic crossing point fought over repeatedly in the Eighty Years' War and later conflicts.
Modern Venlo functions as a logistics corridor. The Greenport Venlo concept combines greenhouse horticulture, food processing, and distribution, taking advantage of the crossroads position between the Randstad, the Ruhr area, and Belgium. The Floriade world horticultural exhibition was held here in 2012.
The Limburgs Museum, covering the cultural history of the province from prehistory to the present, is the main museum. Carnival in Venlo follows the Limburgish tradition, with the city temporarily renamed to Jansen-Jansen-Jansen during the festivities. Roermond is about 25 kilometres south, Eindhoven roughly 55 kilometres west. The German city of Moenchengladbach is 30 kilometres east.
