Venray: Peel Region Town with a War Cemetery
Venray counts roughly 39,000 inhabitants and lies in northern Limburg near the border with North Brabant. The town saw fierce fighting in October 1944 during the Overloon-Venray offensive, one of the last major tank battles on Dutch soil. The Venray War Cemetery holds over 690 Commonwealth graves. The Oorlogsmuseum in neighbouring Overloon documents the battle with military vehicles and equipment.
The Grote Kerk Sint-Petrus Banden, a 15th-century church with a remarkable collection of wooden sculptures, stands in the centre. The surrounding Peel landscape, once a vast raised bog, has been largely converted to farmland but patches of heathland survive in the Mariapeel and Deurnese Peel reserves.
Venlo is about 25 kilometres southeast. Nijmegen lies roughly 40 kilometres north. The A73 motorway connects Venray to both cities.
Psychiatric care has been a significant employer since the 19th century, with the Vincent van Gogh Institute operating one of the largest mental health facilities in the country on the eastern edge of town.
