Two villages that grew together: Aarle and Rixtel merged administratively in 1810 and physically in the decades that followed. The Aa river, a modest Brabant stream, passes through on its way to 's-Hertogenbosch. About 8,300 people live here, within the gemeente Laarbeek, surrounded by flat agricultural land typical of eastern North Brabant.
Cigar manufacturing was once Aarle-Rixtel's main industry, with several factories operating from the late 19th to mid-20th century. The Karel I cigar brand had connections to the area. Today, employment centres on Helmond (8 kilometres northwest) and Eindhoven (20 kilometres west). The South Willems Canal runs nearby, originally built for barge transport between Maastricht and 's-Hertogenbosch.
A small nature area along the Aa offers walking paths through riverside meadows and alder woodland.
