Best: Brabant Town Between Eindhoven and Oirschot
Best has roughly 29,100 residents and lies in North Brabant west of Eindhoven. The town grew significantly after the Second World War as a residential area for Eindhoven workers, particularly those employed at Philips and DAF. The Wilhelminakanaal passes through the municipality and was the scene of heavy fighting during Operation Market Garden in September 1944 when the Son bridge was destroyed.
The Oirschotse Heide and Nieuwe Heide nature areas lie south and west of the town, providing heathland and forest for walking. The centre is compact. The Batadorp neighbourhood, built in the 1930s by the Bata shoe company for its workers, has a distinctive planned layout modelled on company towns elsewhere in Europe.
Eindhoven is about 8 kilometres east. Oirschot lies roughly 5 kilometres southwest. Tilburg is approximately 25 kilometres west. The A2 and A58 motorways cross near Best.
