Boxmeer: Maas River Market Town in Northeast Brabant
Every year since the 14th century, the Paardendagen horse fair draws crowds to Boxmeer. It is one of the oldest and largest equestrian events in the Netherlands, reflecting the town's long role as a market centre for northeast Brabant. About 12,407 people live here along the south bank of the Maas, within the gemeente Land van Cuijk since 2022.
The pharmaceutical company MSD has a major production facility in Boxmeer, making it one of the area's largest employers. The Maasheggen, ancient hedgerows along the Maas floodplain, hold UNESCO Man and Biosphere recognition. The Overloon War Museum lies in the neighbouring village.
River clay soils along the Maas give way to sandy higher ground further south. Nijmegen is about 25 kilometres northwest, Cuijk approximately 5 kilometres west.
