Cranendonck has about 19,966 residents and lies in the southeast of North Brabant. The gemeente includes the towns of Budel, Maarheeze, Soerendonk, and Gastel. Budel-Dorplein was built as a planned Philips company village in the 1920s for workers at the zinc smelter. Nyrstar, the current operator of the zinc plant, remains one of the area's largest industrial employers.
The landscape is characteristic of the Brabantse Peel: sandy soils, pine forests, and remnants of former peat bogs. The Groote Heide and Strabrechtse Heide nature reserves lie nearby. The Kempen region straddles the Dutch-Belgian border here, and cross-border connections with the Flemish Kempen are historically strong. The Zuid-Willemsvaart canal passes through the municipality, connecting it to the broader waterway network.
Eindhoven is about 20 kilometres north. Weert lies roughly 15 kilometres south. The Belgian border is approximately 10 kilometres to the south.
