De Kruiskamp: Working-Class District in 's-Hertogenbosch
Built in the 1920s and 1930s to address housing shortages, De Kruiskamp was one of 's-Hertogenbosch's first planned social housing districts. The original layout featured modest row houses on a grid pattern, designed for factory workers. About 8,025 people live in the neighbourhood today, on the northern side of the Brabant provincial capital.
Urban renewal from the 1990s onward replaced some of the original housing with newer apartments and improved public spaces. The neighbourhood has a mixed population, with both long-term residents and newcomers. The Zuiderpark borders De Kruiskamp to the south, offering green space. 's-Hertogenbosch station is about 2 kilometres southwest, with rail connections to Utrecht, Eindhoven, and Nijmegen.
The annual 's-Hertogenbosch carnival, known as Oeteldonk, reaches into De Kruiskamp with neighbourhood-level celebrations. Local schools and community centres also function as social hubs for an area where long-established Brabant culture meets a more diverse, younger population.
