Geldrop: Textile Town and Tolkien's Brabant Inspiration
Geldrop has about 27,900 residents and lies in North Brabant directly southeast of Eindhoven. The town's growth was driven by textile manufacturing: the Mignot en De Block factory and other mills operated here from the 19th century. Kasteel Geldrop, a moated country house dating in parts to the 15th century, is the main historical landmark.
Geldrop has gained attention for its Tolkien connection. J.R.R. Tolkien's mother's family, the Suffield line, is said to have connections to the area, and local street and place names bear resemblance to names in Middle-earth. The municipality merged with Mierlo in 2004 to form Geldrop-Mierlo. The Gijzenrooi heathland and the Dommel river valley provide nature areas at the town's edges.
Eindhoven is about 5 kilometres northwest. Helmond lies roughly 10 kilometres east. The A67 motorway passes south of the municipality.
