Until 1997, Halsteren was an independent municipality. Its merger into Bergen op Zoom made it a suburban village on the city's northern edge, though local identity persists through community associations and carnival. About 9,850 residents live here. Fort de Roovere, part of the Zuiderwaterlinie defence system, lies in the surrounding area and is known for the Moses Bridge, a sunken pedestrian bridge designed by RO&AD Architecten that cuts through the fort's moat at water level.
The centre around the Dorpsstraat and the Sint-Martinuskerk retains a village atmosphere. The Brabantse Wal, a forested ridge formed by the transition from sandy Brabant soil to the Zeeland clay polders, runs through the municipality. This escarpment provides walking routes with unusual elevation changes for the region.
Bergen op Zoom's centre is about 5 kilometres south. Steenbergen lies roughly 8 kilometres north. The A4 motorway is accessible nearby.
