Hilvarenbeek: Safari Park and a Medieval Church
The Beekse Bergen safari park, where visitors drive or boat past African wildlife in a Brabant setting, lies just outside Hilvarenbeek. It is one of the most visited animal parks in the Netherlands. The village itself is considerably older: the Vrijthof square and the 15th-century Sint-Petrus' Bandenkerk form a well-preserved medieval centre. About 7,855 residents live here, in the gemeente Hilvarenbeek, between Tilburg and the Belgian border.
Surrounding the village, sandy Kempen landscape alternates with small-scale agriculture and patches of woodland. The Beekse Bergen recreation area also includes a holiday park and a lake beach. Tilburg is about 10 kilometres north. The area has a cross-border dimension: Belgian Turnhout is roughly 20 kilometres south.
The annual Hilvarenbeek kermis and the Brabantsedag cultural procession mark the village calendar. Agricultural traditions persist in the surrounding hamlets, where small-scale dairy and livestock farming continues alongside suburban commuter housing.
