Oisterwijk: Leather Tanning and Forest Pools in Central Brabant
Oisterwijk has about 25,980 residents and lies in North Brabant between Tilburg and 's-Hertogenbosch. The town has historically been associated with leather tanning, using water from the local streams. The Oisterwijkse Vennen, a cluster of forest pools set among pine and deciduous woodland, make the town an exception in a province not generally known for natural beauty of this kind. Swimming in several of the vennen is permitted.
The centre around the Lind, a square with a double row of linden trees, has a village character. The KVL leerfabriek, the former leather factory complex, has been redeveloped into housing, restaurants, and cultural space. Oisterwijk merged with Haaren in 2021 as part of a broader municipal reorganisation.
Tilburg is about 8 kilometres southwest. 's-Hertogenbosch lies roughly 20 kilometres north. The A58 motorway passes south of the town.
