Veghel became part of the gemeente Meierijstad in 2017 following a merger with Sint-Oedenrode and Schijndel. The old centre around the Markt and the Sint-Lambertuskerk retains a compact Brabant village character. During Operation Market Garden in September 1944, the road through Veghel formed part of Hell's Highway, the supply corridor to Arnhem.
