Zundert: Van Gogh's Birthplace in the Brabant Borderland

Vincent van Gogh was born in Zundert on 30 March 1853, in the parsonage on Markt 29. The building no longer stands, but the Vincent van GoghHuis on the same square now operates as a museum and art space dedicated to emerging artists rather than a conventional Van Gogh exhibition. About 6,835 residents live in this North Brabant village near the Belgian border.

Zundert is better known locally for its annual Bloemencorso, a flower parade held on the first Sunday of September. Neighbourhood teams spend months constructing enormous floats from dahlias, competing for prizes in a tradition dating to 1936. The scale of the floats relative to the village size makes it one of the more remarkable local festivals in the southern Netherlands.

The surrounding countryside is flat, sandy, and given to tree nurseries, strawberry cultivation, and dairy farming. Etten-Leur is about 10 kilometres north. The Belgian city of Breda is closer in some directions than any Dutch town of comparable size, at roughly 15 kilometres northeast.
