Aalsmeer has roughly 22,990 inhabitants and lies in North Holland south of Amsterdam. The Royal FloraHolland auction complex here is the largest flower and plant trading centre in the world. The building covers over 500,000 square metres, and billions of flowers pass through it annually, distributed to markets across Europe and beyond. The auction clock system, where prices drop rather than rise, is a Dutch invention.
The Westeinderplassen, a large lake formed from peat extraction, provides sailing and recreation directly north of the village. The Historische Tuin Aalsmeer preserves old flower and plant varieties. Aalsmeer's economy revolves almost entirely around horticulture and the auction.
Schiphol airport is about 5 kilometres north. Amsterdam is roughly 15 kilometres northeast. Uithoorn borders to the south.
